I’ve always collected quotes from the books that I’ve read. I usually keep a notebook with me while I’m reading a book so that I can write down any quotes or sayings that interest me. I stopped taking notes for a few years and just started underlining the quotes in the book but I have started taking notes again as I seem to use them and refer back to them more often.
Here’s some food quotes from chefs, home cooks, food writers, and food lovers of all shapes and sizes. The thing that I love about food is that anyone can have an opinion on it and be right as we’re all food experts. We’ve been putting the stuff in our mouths all of our lives, so we have plenty of experience.
Obviously professionals can describe things in more depth as they’ve gained more knowledge and understanding over their careers, but we all have plenty of experience with food, even if we’ve never set foot in the kitchen. Food is life.
But today lets just look at what those who dedicate their lives to food have to say about it.

Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food. The body, these waterheads imagine, is a temple that should not be polluted by animal protein. It’s healthier, they insist, though every vegetarian waiter I’ve worked with is brought down by any rumor of a cold.
Anthony Bourdain
Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all.

I was working for a chef a long time ago who told me to not skip steps or be in a hurry. Success in a kitchen is more like a marathon and less like a sprint. Rising up the ranks too quickly isn’t necessarily a good thing.
Wylie Dufresne
Food is celebratory. People who don’t cook don’t know how much fun they’re missing.
Leo Buscaglia
The pressure on young chefs today is far greater than ever before in terms of social skills, marketing skills, cooking skills, personality and, more importantly, delivering on the plate. So you need to be strong. Physically fit. So my chefs get weighed every time they come into the kitchen.

If you truly get in touch with a piece of carrot, you get in touch with the soil, the rain, the sunshine. You get in touch with Mother Earth and eating in such a way, you feel in touch with true life, your roots, and that is meditation. If we chew every morsel of our food in that way we become grateful and when you are grateful, you are happy.
Thich Nhat Hanh

Jamie Oliver
My husband cooks fancier food for himself than I’ve ever cooked on-air. I call him from the road, and he’s making champagne-vanilla salmon or black-cherry pork chop. Half of me is feeling unworthy. Not only am I not a chef, I’m not a better cook than my own husband!
Rachel Ray
The only real stumbling block is fear of failure. In cooking you’ve got to have a what-the-hell attitude.

Mary Berry
I’ve long believed that good food, good eating, is all about risk. Whether we’re talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime ‘associates,’ food, for me, has always been an adventure.

Cooking is like painting or writing a song. Just as there are only so many notes or colors, there are only so many flavors – it’s how you combine them that sets you apart.
