Cornwell’s Lancashire Relish is an old Australian classic sauce. It’s much like its more famous cousin Worcestershire sauce except it’s more mild and fruity, just as it says on the bottle. I’m told it’s similar to HP Sauce or Henderson’s Relish in the United Kingdom but don’t quote me on that. Try to get a bottle of the real thing if you can as it’ll be well worth the effort. In Australia it’s in every grocery store in the country but it’ll be much harder to get in other countries. A few online grocers in Australia should be able to send you a bottle or two.

I use it in a variety of meat dishes but it is also great on toast! Using white bread to toast, spreading it with margarine, and then dipping the bread into the sauce. I don’t eat a lot of bread and when I do it’s usually multi-grain, wholemeal or a gluten-free bread, but when I do have regular white bread in the house I’ll make toast and dip it in Cornwells Relish sauce. It’s making my mouth salivate as I write this! 😉
If you can’t get hold of it, get on a plane and make the trip to Australia.
You could probably use Worcestershire sauce if you don’t like flying but it just won’t be Cornwell’s Lancashire Relish!
The Cornwell’s food brand has been around since 1895 when it made its first vinegar products. They now make a variety of vinegar products, Worcestershire sauce, mint sauce, and Lancashire Relish. They’re owned by the Goodman Fielder company in Australia and New Zealand.
I use Cornwell’s Relish in my mum’s recipe for rissoles (meatballs) which means you’ll just HAVE TO find a bottle of the real thing if you want to make the tastiest rissoles on the planet 😉
Update 2 December 2019: Coles and Woolworths supermarkets in Australia are now stocking bottles of Cornwells Lancashire Relish again. A few people have contacted me from different regions to say that things are back to normal. See the first update below and the comments below to see what I’m talking about. I couldn’t find out why the supermarkets took them off shelves but they’re back now, so enjoy your relish! 😁
Update September 2019: Apparently Coles and Woolworths took Cornwell’s Lancashire Relish off the shelves of some of their supermarkets in Australia. People have contacted me and left comments below regarding this.
I’ve been out of the country all this year and haven’t been following the situation, but I can say that I just had a look on the Woolworth’s website and they do have Cornwell’s Relish for sale and in stock online. So for those of you who can’t find it in your local stores they’re still selling it online.
Cornwell’s Relish Ingredients: A few people have asked for the ingredients to make Cornwell’s Lancashire Relish. Perhaps it’s related to it being taken off supermarket shelves in some areas? Would be interesting to try some homemade relish in the style of Cornwell’s relish.
