In North America they’re called Scallions and in the United Kingdom and places like Australia they’re called Spring Onions. They grow much like a regular onion would but they don’t form large bulbs at the bottom of the plant. Both the white part of the stem and the green leafier sections are used. Scallions have a mild onion taste which is perfect for salads and used as garnish. They’re also commonly used in many Asian dishes.
Other names it has been called include green onions, syboe, yard onion, long onion, green shallots, and salad onions.
The roots and the tips of the leaves are usually removed, but the rest of the plant is used.
A lot of Asian Dishes will use scallions or spring onions. See the Fried Rice recipe or the Tartare Sauce recipes for two different uses of the ingredient.
